Have you seen the movie UP? I can't look at this picture without thinking of the "cone of shame".

The autism question: As much as is possible treat him as "normal". Ask him questions about the things he likes to talk about (if he is verbal). So often people with disabilities and their families are treated as if they are invisible. Small acts of ordinary kindness are worth more than the most precious jewels to the person with the disability and thier family. Also if he is verbal, don't be too offended by anything he might say. The filter of what is socially appropriate is not "on" and whatever he is thinking about at the moment is just going to pop out. Your best resource, if they are willing, will be his family. Ask them how you can best interact with him. Your willingness to try will mean so much to them.
